Neonatal Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) Workshop

29 July @ 8:30 am 5:00 pm

Dear Colleagues,

It is with great excitement that I invite you to our Neonatal Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) Workshop, taking place on July 29-30, 2025. We have received confirmation of the acceptance for CPD approval from the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH) for our course now, and I anticipate that our event will soon gain visibility on the College website. This workshop is meticulously crafted to inspire clinicians at every level—whether you’re just beginning with ultrasound or seeking to elevate your advanced skills.

Workshop Highlights

  • Comprehensive Coverage: Please see the attached document for the programme and registration link below.
  • Detailed instructions on neonatal head and lung ultrasound, focusing on practical applications.
  • Training on real-time confirmation of umbilical line placement, enhancing clinical accuracy.
  • Case-Based Learning: Interactive discussions centred on real case-based scenarios, enabling participants to apply knowledge in clinical contexts.
  • Hands-On Practice: Gain practical experience using intelligent ultrasound simulators to build confidence and proficiency.
  • Expert Faculty: Delivered by experienced and highly qualified facilitators specialising in neonatal ultrasound.
  • Skill Development: Build confidence in incorporating these essential skills into your routine neonatal management.

This workshop is particularly significant as it represents the first-ever neonatal lung ultrasound training event in Southwest England—a milestone achievement in advancing regional neonatal care.

Why Participate?

  • Accessible Fees: The registration fee has been kept low to ensure affordability, covering administrative and organisational costs while maximising accessibility for clinicians.
  • Support for Innovation: All marginal proceeds will be allocated toward procuring a Babywork Intelligent Ultrasound Simulator for the neonatal department at Derriford Hospital for future training and teaching.
  • Refreshments Provided: Enjoy on-site refreshments to ensure a comfortable and focused learning environment.
  • A Milestone for Quality Improvement: This training will play a pivotal role in successfully implementing various ultrasound-based quality improvement project initiatives on head, lung ultrasound and real-time umbilical line confirmation.

Important Details

  • Limited Seats: The workshop is capped at 24 participants, with strong interest already shown by external registrants. Early registration is highly recommended.

Target Audience:

  • Neonatal & Paediatric Consultants & Post CCT fellows
  • Resident doctors/SAS/Clinical fellows/Locally employed doctors(LED) in Paediatrics and Radiology
  • Advanced & Enhanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioners (ANNPs & ENNPs)

We are excited to host a course that will not only empower participants with essential clinical skills but also contribute to the broader goal of improving neonatal care delivery.

Should you have any questions or wish to secure your place, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Kindly forward the attached details to the others in your department whom you think would benefit.

I look forward to welcoming you all.

Thank you

Warm regards,

  • Venue: Southwest Imaging Training Academy, 14 William Prance Rd, Plymouth PL6 5WR
  • Day 1: Point of care Neonatal Cranial Ultrasound Scan
  • Day 2: Point of care Neonatal Lung Ultrasound Scan and Umbilical venous and arterial line tip confirmation

Aims of the Workshop:

  1. To enhance clinicians’ confidence and competence in performing and interpreting point-of-care cranial and lung ultrasound in neonates.
  2. To promote safe and effective use of bedside ultrasound for the assessment of critically ill neonates.
  3. To support accurate tip confirmation of umbilical venous and arterial catheters using ultrasound.
  4. To foster interdisciplinary collaboration and discussion between neonatologists, paediatricians, ANNPs/ENNPs, and paediatric radiologists.
  5. To encourage integration of ultrasound imaging into daily neonatal clinical practice.

Day 1 – Neonatal Cranial Ultrasound

Objectives:

  • Understand the principles and indications for cranial ultrasound in neonates.
  • Identify normal and abnormal cranial ultrasound findings
  • Gain hands-on experience in cranial ultrasound technique using neonatal models/simulators.
  • Recognise key anatomical landmarks and interpret common pathologies on ultrasound.
  • Discuss challenging cases with experts in neonatal neuroimaging and radiology.

Day 2 – Neonatal Lung Ultrasound & Umbilical Lines Tip Confirmation

Objectives:

  • Understand the utility and limitations of lung ultrasound in assessing respiratory conditions
  • Acquire hands-on experience in lung ultrasound image acquisition and interpretation.
  • Learn the role of ultrasound in the confirmation of umbilical catheter position, with emphasis on real-time tip localisation.
